Like practically no other manufacturer, Volkswagen is identified with an extensive portfolio of electrified models: Alongside the purely electric ID.3 and ID.4 models that were recently added to the product range, a total of seven new plug-in hybrid models – from the Golf to the Touareg – have now been launched. The new electric and hybrid models (or PHEV for short) are fundamental components of the Way to Zero strategy that is devised to make Volkswagen a carbon-neutral company.

When it comes to plug-in hybrids, the new Volkswagen models – such as the Golf eHybrid, Golf GTE, Tiguan eHybrid, Arteon eHybrid, Arteon Shooting Brake eHybrid and the Touareg eHybrid and Touareg R – are compelling the trend towards electric drive systems. Furthermore, the latest plug-in hybrid version of the Passat Variant (GTE) has been on the market since 2019. All these new models are becoming more and more popular, and increasingly account for the new vehicle registrations each month.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles have an additional electric motor on board. Both the electric drive motor as well as the combustion engine can propel the vehicles individually or jointly. That makes a PHEV from Volkswagen the perfect solution for anyone who wants to drive using purely electric power for short, day-to-day journeys, but who also requires a greater combined range for weekend excursions or holidays. With the long electric ranges offered by the latest plug-in hybrid models – such as up to 65 km (WLTP) in the case of the new Golf eHybrid – almost any day-to-day distance can be covered with zero emissions. This has also been confirmed by a study conducted by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, which states that 95 per cent of all daily car journeys are shorter than 50 km.
