A new development is the electromechanical Active Roll Stabilization (eAWS) system used on the Touareg. To extend the physical limits of driving, the Touareg equipped with eAWS features two electromechanical anti-roll bars. The two ends of each roll bar are connected to each other by a step motor. Depending on the driving situation, the two ends of the anti-roll bar are twisted relative to each other to stiffen the bar or are decoupled. When cornering, the lateral inclination (roll) of the SUV’s body is significantly reduced by the active anti-roll bars. Straight-line running on roads which are uneven on one side is also enhanced. When driving off-road, the articulation of the axles and the traction can be improved by the decoupling of the anti-roll bars.
