The Type 3, which supplemented the range from 1961 to 1973, was available as a two-door notchback and fastback sedan and as an estate car. Key DNA features of the Type 3 included the central tube platform frame, the torsion bar suspension and the air-cooled rear engine, which initially developed 45 PS, and were taken from the Beetle, but this model offered more space and a rear trunk accessible from the exterior. The estate version was launched in February 1962, followed by the fastback model TL (“touring limousine”). In 1969, Volkswagen upgraded the series with a flat-four engine with 1,600 instead of 1,500 cm, new bumpers, an enlarged front trunk, larger direction indicators extending around the corners and new rear lights. This was a successful model, with more than 2.6 million units produced.
