The first generation of the four-wheel-drive Touareg was launched in 2002. This model combined the characteristics of an off-road model with the comfort features of a luxury sedan, creating a new vehicle concept. About 500,000 units of the first generation were sold throughout the world. In March 2010, Volkswagen presented the newly developed second generation to the media. While the first generation of the SUV was designed to embody the optimum synthesis of comfort and off-road characteristics, the design parameters for the second generation had shifted more in the direction of very high comfort. About half a million units of the second-generation Touareg were sold and the third generation has been on the market since 2018.

Car and smartphone merge into one: Touareg now parks by remote control
The Touareg now drives into and out of parking spaces fully automatically. Virtually by remote control – from outside the vehicle using a smartphone. With the new Park Assist with remote control assist system. The typical situation: a multi-storey car park at the airport, for example. Just before the flight is due to leave. Narrow parking spaces. And that means stopping the car in the driving lane, unloading the luggage from the luggage compartment, getting in again, manoeuvring the car into the tight space, and finally squeezing yourself out of the car. Stress. Park Assist with remote control now takes over this job in the Touareg. With no stress at all. -
Hybrid world premiere in Geneva: the new Touareg R
Volkswagen ramps up its hybrid campaign in 2020: with the world premiere of the new Touareg R at the Geneva Motor Show (5 to 15 March 2020), the brand’s top-of-the-range model now also features a plug-in hybrid drive. The Touareg R with a power output of 340 kW (462 PS) offers an innovative blend of superlative performance and electric efficiency. When the battery is sufficiently charged, the new SUV always starts in electric E-MODE for zero emissions. The all-round talent can be driven at up to 140 km/h using electric power; above this speed, the turbocharged V6 petrol engine (TSI) supplements the electric drive motor. The Touareg R will cover most commuter distances fully electrically.
