The Cross Coupé GTE study, first shown in Detroit in 2015, started the countdown for the final development phase of the Atlas – a seven-seater mid-size SUV built at Volkswagen’s US plant in Chattanooga and launched in the USA in 2016. At the same time, the Cross Coupé GTE showed how a five-seater coupé version of the Atlas might look. This is an SUV with a 265 kW / 360 PS plug-in hybrid powertrain and four-wheel drive. The abbreviation “GTE” is used to designate models with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It offers the long-distance comfort and dynamics of a Gran Turismo at the same time as allowing zero-emission operation thanks to an electric motor or motors and a battery which can be charged by an external power source.
