Volkswagen’s XL1, presented in 2013, was the world’s most economical production car featuring a diesel plug-in hybrid powertrain, with fuel consumption of only 0.9 l/100 km. The powertrain consisted of a two-cylinder TDI engine (35 kW / 48 PS) and an electric motor (20 kW / 27 PS), a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) and a lithium-ion battery. The two-seater could be driven in full-electric mode with zero local emissions for a distance of up to 50 kilometers. The key question here: By how much could the energy consumption of cars be reduced if all the stops were pulled out for efficiency? There is now an answer to this question from Volkswagen. It is the new XL1, with combined fuel consumption of 0.9 l/100 km. No other production car with a diesel plug-in hybrid is more fuel-efficient. The small-series production of the XL1 Hybrid (2014) and the MOIA (2018) represent special milestones for the site. The Osnabrück site took on various partial scopes for other models, ranging from painting to final assembly, including for the Skoda Karoq, the Volkswagen Tiguan or the Porsche Cayenne. In addition to the final assembly of the Arteon Shooting Brake, the current flagship of the site, the T-Roc Cabriolet, also runs off the production line in Osnabrück. From week 17/2023, the phase-out of the Porsche Cayman and Porsche Boxster will start at the site.
